Rachel Wylde

Executive Director

Rachel Wylde is the founding director of Compass High School. She started her career in education as an educational therapist then worked as a high school special education teacher. She taught for five years in a therapeutic school before becoming a school administrator. She has been the director of three schools for students with learning differences. In 2006, Rachel founded Bayhill High School, which has become one of the premier schools for students with learning differences in Northern California.

Rachel has been active in statewide public policy, sitting on the board of the California Association of Special Education Schools (CAPSES) for 12 years, and in school governance, serving as board chair of a North Oakland Community Charter School (NOCCS).

Rachel has a BA in Psychology and a MA in Special Education from San Francisco State University, and a MA in Educational Leadership from Mills College. She has teaching credentials in multiple subjects, special education, and administration. Rachel is originally from San Francisco; she loves to cook and has published a cookbook, likes to work out and read, and travels to Ireland frequently with her husband and three children.

 

Andrea Adelmann

Chief Financial Officer

Andrea Adelmann brings more than 18 years of nonprofit experience at the national and local level to Compass High School. She co-founded Compass High School in 2012 after identifying an educational need for her own daughter as well as other students in the San Francisco Bay Area.  With a corporate background in Finance and Accounting, Andrea was named the school’s opening Chief Financial Officer.  She was named Board Chair in December 2015.  Andrea is currently a Referral Coordinator of Early Intervention Services, providing remote support for families in Fairfax County, Virginia. Concurrently she serves as Board Treasurer for The Shaken Baby Alliance, a national nonprofit organization based in Fort Worth, Texas.

Prior to her work in the nonprofit sector, Andrea had a successful career as a hotel controller with Marriott International in northern and southern California and New Mexico. She is married and the mother of two high school-aged children, one of whom is a survivor of Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma. She holds a BA in German from UC Davis and pursued graduate coursework in Accounting at UC Berkeley and San Francisco State University.

Robert Estko

Trustee

Bob’s career in Silicon Valley began in 1979, and while most of the ensuing years were spent in Human Resources management, he had stints in Operations and Business Planning. He served in senior Employee Relations, Organizational Development, and Staffing roles at Raychem, Spectra Physics, Syntex, Frame Technology, and Adobe. As a member of the California Bar, Bob often acted as in-house liaison to outside counsel on employment & labor matters.

Bob holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a Developmental focus from Northern Illinois University, and MBA and Juris Doctor degrees from Santa Clara University. Early in his 37 year career, Bob completed work towards an MSW degree at the Jane Addams School of Social Work (UICC) and worked for two years as a social worker in the Chicago area with disadvantaged youth. From 1994 to 2006, Bob coached youth sports, supporting his two sons in Little League for 11 years, and his daughter in soccer, basketball, and softball programs for 4 years. Having a strong personal interest in fitness and health, he is a certified personal trainer and maintains a certification in CPR and AED. Throughout his daughter’s elementary school years, Bob volunteered in the school library, reading to classes, and chaperoned nearly every school field trip. At her middle school, he taught a semester-long class called Kids and the Law, based on a publication funded by the California Bar Foundation.

Joe Farned

Vice Chair

Joe Farned has nearly 30 years of experience in the design, development and production of packaging for consumer electronics and technology companies. Joe has built and led sales teams for Crown Zellerbach, Mead and International Paper and is currently Manager Strategic Accounts for Veritiv Corporation.

Joe holds a BA from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and an MBA from Santa Clara University. Joe started volunteering in college where he provided mentoring services for local disadvantaged high school students. Upon relocating to Silicon Valley, he joined the Big Brother/Big Sister organization and served as a volunteer for several years. After starting a family, Joe became active in youth sports – coaching basketball, baseball and AYSO soccer teams. Joe also served as an Assistant Scoutmaster for his son’s Boy Scout troop in Menlo Park.

Joe has a son and a daughter, loves to travel and is an avid tennis player.

 

Kim Garlinghouse-Jones

Trustee

Kim Garlinghouse-Jones is a founder of Compass High School and shares the vision of making Compass an innovative school and program that will stand at the forefront of education. Kim is a mother of four, including two children with learning differences, and is actively involved in the community and education system. Her past experience includes serving on the Ravenswood Education Foundation in East Palo Alto for three years. She currently works as a medical advocate for Good Medicine in San Francisco.

Kim received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Vanderbilt University in 1988 and Master’s in Public Health Advocacy from Johns Hopkins University in 1996. She has eight years of experience as an oncology nurse and has worked in oncology research at Stanford University.

Mark Harrington

Chairperson

Mark Harrington is a career-long leader in technology businesses in the Bay Area and other technology centers in the U.S. Until recently, he was vice president and executive team member of Trimble Navigation Limited in Sunnyvale, CA, responsible for its Precision Agriculture, Forestry and Utilities businesses. His prior experience at Trimble included managing the Survey, Mapping and Geographic Information Systems businesses and directing the company’s strategy and acquisitions efforts. Prior to Trimble, his roles included senior operational, finance and information technologies positions at Finisar Corporation in Sunnyvale, Cielo Communications in Broomfield CO and Vixel Corporation in Bothell WA. He began his career at Spectra-Physics and Varian Associates in California. Mr. Harrington received his B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is currently active in angel investing in the Bay Area and Seattle regions.

Jean Kovacs

Trustee

Jean has more than 30 years’ experience directing technology companies, delivering exceptional results with growing enterprises. Jean is currently president of the Northern California Chapter of the HBS Alumni Angels, a forum for Harvard alumni to connect with, learn about, and invest in quality early-stage companies. Her extensive resumé includes serving as CEO and co-founder of Comergent Technologies, and co-founder and executive vice-president of Qualix Group. She was named to the Silicon Valley/San Francisco Business Journal’s list of Most Influential Women in Business and has been profiled in Fortune, The Financial Times, Computerworld, Internet World, and InfoWorld.

Jean holds an MBA from Harvard University and a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from Northeastern University. She currently sits on various technology boards and is an advisor to two investment groups. Jean is also Board Chair Emeritus of BUILD, a nonprofit organization that works with high-school students in under-resourced communities.

Mamatha Shankar

Secretary

Mamatha Shankar envisioned a high school for students with learning differences that would enrich their learning, hone their talents, and open new opportunities. Watching her daughter reach her full potential through a supportive middle school education, Mamatha was determined to find a school that would continue this growth, thereby taking on the challenge of co-founding Compass High School. Passionate about education, Mamatha is very engaged in the schools that her three children attend. In addition to being an active volunteer and room parent, Mamatha has been involved in development activities for many years.

Prior to starting a family, Mamatha was a department manager for a large retailer, where she was responsible for all operational aspects, including marketing, managing inventory, and resource planning. Following this, she worked for a communications startup in a customer support role. Mamatha has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Sacramento State University and currently works as an Operations Manager at a solar start-up.
